Autonomic Nervous System
You do not have access to this note.
Somatic --> voluntary control of skeletal muscles and conscious perception
Viceral (autonomic NS) --> involuntary contraction of smooth and cardiac muscle, secretomotor
ANS is under control by Hypothalamus via descending hypothalamic fiber tracts which synapse on and activate the preganglionic neurons located in preganglionic nuclei within the gray matter of the spinal cord or brainstem
Preganglionic neurons located in CNS inside gray matter of spinal cord or autonomiv nuclei of brainstem
Postganglionic neurons located in motor ganglia in the PNS
Ganglia --> collection of cell bodies of common function located in PNS
Sensory Ganglia --> cell bodies of pseudounipolar sensory neurons; no synapse
Motor Autonomic Ganglia --> bodies of postganglionic; have synapse!
Greater Thoracic (t5-t9): foregut
Lesser Thoracic (t10-t11) : midgut
Least Thoracic (t12): Kidney, gonads, etc
To get to the Head:
4 Terminal Parasympathetic Ganglia of Head:
Vagus Nerve innervates the thoracic and abdomen viscera
Pelvic Splanchnic (s2-s4) --> rectum, bladder, erectile tissue
