develop from respiratory diverticulum off the endodermal lining of the esophagus beginning in the 4th week
Premature Birth --> by 25-26th weeks gestation, the lungs are suffciently developed to allow for gas exchange. Infant born prematurily after this point in development has a good chance of survival with proper neonatal care
Transesophageal Fistula --> occurs when the TE septum forms incorrectly resulting in an abnormal communicaation between the trachea and esophagus
Pulmonary Hypoplasia --> underdeveloped lungs. Results in decrease in lung volume and life threatening
Respiratory Distress Syndrome -> inadequate levels of surfactant
