Review integrated physiology, pathology, and pharmacology of the GI Tract system, including histology and anatomy of the GI tract, jaundice, hematemesis, encephalopathy, cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, acute viral hepatitis, and dysphagia.

Learning Objectives

  • GI Tract
    • Describe the clinical pathologic correlation and natural history of:
    • Abdominal Pain (acute cholecystitis, GERD, PUD, acute pancreatitis, diverticular disease, acute appendicitis, Crohn disease, acute gastroenteritis, small bowel obstruction/infarction)
    • Dysphagia (achalasia)
    • Diarrhea (acute/chronic, watery/bloody, hematemesis, melena, hematochezia)
  • Liver
    • Describe the clinical pathologic correlation and natural history of:
    • Bilirubin metabolism, cirrhosis, viral hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease, autoimmune hepatitis, hemachromatotis, Wilson disease, Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, NAFLD & steatohepatitis, and cholestasis.
